This novel uses hypertext but it is not "about" hypertext. It is a story...not an example of digital technology. The reason hypertext is being used is very simple. It allows the central thread of the story to proceed at a rapid rate (after all, this is an adventure novel) and still provides the opportunity to express the character's background and opinions. It also provides the opportunity to publish documents (letters, song lyrics etc) that are relevant to the story without slowing down the action. Most of the links in this book are of that sort...that is, character development that expands the character's point of view and history. However, as I mentioned above, links will be added that come from other characters' points of view. There ARE facts in the hypertext jumps that are important to the main thread but they are usually not critical to the current chapter.
This is not a tree novel. All of the characters live in the same timeline and the same circumstantial world. The only variations in the plot are those that could happen to individuals in a group in a single world. However, I do play a bit with perception. Sometimes, two people may "perceive" reality in different ways...just like in "real" life.This book is, in fact, a very tame hypertext novel. I only use hypertext when I think it actually improves the story. There are a number of people on the net pushing the edge with hypertext literature. They are doing great things. I am not interested in pushing the edge. As I said, I am interested in telling a story.
The first chapter has NO hypertext links! This is not a mistake. Chapter one serves as an introduction to the story. The first hypertext links are in chapter two.
