THE NET JUNKIE PRIMER

Okay little net junkie...see this picture to the left?

That's a mountain.

Imagine a huge pile of data, one file on top of the other, gigs and gigs and so on until it is thousands of feet high...but none of it is bits. It's even pre-analog. In fact, its all hardware.

Pretty wild huh? What's it made of? Well, you know that black stuff that gets under your toenails. It's sort of like that. It looks a bit like the toner in your laser printer. We call it dirt.

Many mountains are made of something called rock...no, not like Soul Asylum. Rock is sort of like dirt compressed. Over thousands of years, things called wind and water (you can call it windzip) unzip the rock files and make dirt.

Those tall green things are called trees. They are like viruses that sneak into the dirt files from who knows where and then become self replicating.

That blue stuff at the top is the background. We call it sky.

Some people climb those big mountains. Some people pack up tents and walk through the trees and relax. Some people ride canoes down whitewater rapids in those beautiful rivers or fish for trout in mountain streams. Some people paint them or photograph them or walk into them seeking enlightenment...

...but not you little net junkie...no, not you.
