After I got a little older, I noticed that being
"unmaterialistic" wasn't a popular pastime with
those who have a lot of experience with it. Turns
out there are a few billion people out there who would
give their eye teeth for a little more of that material
we have here in the states. Nothin' like livin' on the streets
of Mexico City or Calcutta with no education, no
prospects and eight kids to clear up any problems
you have with being "materialistic".
The first few years of our married life, Jessie
was as prone to wild adventure and living on the
brink of financial oblivion as I was, but when
our first baby was born things changed. By the time
the boys came squawling into the world, you would
have thought the combined debt of the third world
was coming due on the first of the month. Jessie
decided she wanted financial security, and if Jessie
wants something, she gets it.
